Gemini Rue is a point and click PC adventure set in a Dystopian cyber punk future. A time in which intergalactic travel between planets is an everyday occurrence and entire planets are ran by gangs, driving the populace into a jobless, drug fueled mess. The game revolves around two main protagonists, an intergalactic agent with a shady past Azrael Odin and his brother Delta Six who is being held in a space age rehabilitation center named Center 7.
The premise is simple. Azrael believes that his brother has been kidnapped by his former employers, the Boryokudan. He sets out on a mission to find his brother and recover him from the clutches of evil. As you play out the investigation of Azrael you also go about the day to day routine of Delta Six as he struggles to come to terms with his recent memory loss and incarceration as he is surrounded by unfamiliar faces, all trying to garner his trust in what appears to be a game of deceit and lies.
While the plot may seem like a rather straight edge adventure, there is far more than meets the eye. There are more turns and twists in Gemini Rue than you can shake a stick at and you can’t help but slowly become addicted to the prose as the truth slowly starts to unravel itself before your very eyes, revealing a much deeper, more complex tale.
While the story should appeal to anyone that appreciates good story telling, the graphics may drive more than a few would be players away. Gemini Rue is not a “pretty” game by conventional standards. It’s a throwback to the glory days of the point and click adventure genre. It’s heavily pixelated and plays at an extremely low resolution but somehow manages to keep a unique style. Let’s just say if this game was made in the '90s, it would be regarded as beautiful.
Outside of the nostalgia inducing graphics is some fairly decent voice acting. Not great and not bad, the voice work is almost an added bonus as you rarely see a fully fleshed out point and click adventure game using voice actors, instead using the cheaper text only route.
Overall, Gemini Rue is an amazing experience and even if you are not a fan of video games, you can’t allow yourself to miss out on this amazing journey. Gemini Rue gets 5/5.
