Professionalism is how we present ourselves in an environment where higher expectations are a standard. When we come across as anything less, we lose all sense of credibility, integrity, and an undesirable reputation of our character on a personal level. Why is this so important today?
First Impressions
There’s truth in the adage that you only get to make one first impression. In an office environment, or a retail business where you’re the first person customers come in contact with, you’re demeanor, appearance, tone of voice, and overall professionalism will tell them all they need to know about the place of business, based on that alone.
From door greeters at Wal-Mart to executive positions for CEO’s, your professionalism or lack of can make or break decision’s as to whether or not potential customers will want to conduct business there or take it somewhere else. Never underestimate the value of that first impression.
Integrity
Society expects integrity from our local politicians, on up the line to President of The United States. With that said, that same integrity should be expected from employees and local business’s albeit retail or office, or government. It speaks volumes to society how important honesty is as a whole.
When a person’s integrity is questioned or doubted, it’s quite difficult to regain the same trust from others that was once there. In an environment where one is to present as a professional, tainted opinions loom like a dark cloud and it’s never the same no matter what. Even if you dress it up on the outside…eventually what’s on the inside will still come through. Never underestimate the importance of one’s integrity.
Reputation
From the time we are born until the time we become adults; it’s been ingrained into our hearts and minds the importance of a good reputation. Our reputation is part of who we are. It’s like an invisible twin. It will follow us from place to place, job to job, and relationship to relationship. It’s as valuable as is gold, if not more so. Your reputation will speak volumes to others in a way that words won’t be necessary. That can be in your favor, or it can be the largest obstacle you will ever face. The choice is always yours to make. Never underestimate the value of a good reputation.
Character
Our character bodes all the above aforementioned. The sum of anything less and we fail personally and professionally. Is it more desirable to live up to others standards or expectations, or is it easier to try to live down the negative opinions others can and will form of you overall?
These are but a few things in which to consider when determining the importance of professionalism and how to value the standards in which to live by. Are we all fallible? Yes! Are we above reproach? No. Is one’s character built, or does one’s character determine the difference? Never underestimate the importance of one’s character.
In conclusion, the choices we make set us apart from the reality of what it means to be professional and what it means to exude professionalism. They may sound the same, but they are not. This is where wisdom steps in and our moral compass sets us on the path of all that we can be, so that we can be all that we need to be. Never underestimate one’s wisdom.
