Poetry: Human understanding

by Aaron Faust

Created on: July 18, 2011

So Mordecai, he did so fall beneath the rising sun
Said unto Edmund "One is all and, therefore, all is one"

The two, those two, were scientists and so, devoted all of life
To trying, failing, trying, lists of glory or of further strife

Eventually, their status rose and all who knew them did agree
"Whatever those boys should suppose, that's what is and shall always be"

The church, of course, it dubbed them heathens, damned them for their staunch defiance
"Repent to God!" the priests cried, seething. The boys said "Nay, we have our science".

But one day, God, perhaps the Devil, put into Mordecai's head
That he was on an equal level and thus, he could ne'er lie dead

Said Edmund "Fool! We are not gods. We play naught but a modest part."
But Mordecai did play the odds and found a dagger in his heart

So Mordecai, he did so fall beneath the rising sun
Said unto Edmund "One is all and, therefore, all is one"
