We have all been the spectator as a stalker is ready to strike and kill his next victim. We have watched as a marraige is destroyed from a sordid affair. We have cheered for the working mom who is reunited with her kidnapped child. Through each of these circumstances we cried, cheered, held our breath on the edge of our seat, cursed the bad guy, etc in the comfort of our own home with a big bowl of popcorn. We are the reason drama sells. It is a part of human nature to enjoy the unknown especially from a spectator view.
Drama allows us to see the unsuspecting murdered, the child snatched from his or her front yard while mom is cooking dinner, buildings burned, hostages tortured, cars and planes crashing, etc. Drama provides the normal working man and woman with a sense of the unknown, a first hand look at violence, etc without ever having to set foot outside their home. Drama is a safe way to experience the rough and tumble side of life. The well written scripts pull us from our living room and right into the middle of the action. We jump as the victim is grabbed as if it is us that is there in their shoes. Our minds are going ever so fast as we hope the victim escapes without harm.
We enjoy drama because it touches the bases on thoughts and emotions. We are pulled into the situations as they occur and can relate to the characters. You can feel their joy, pain, suffering, etc. You cheer the good guy on while you curse the bad. Many dramas come with unsuspecting twists and turns so that we the viewer remains involved in the plot. The unexpected plots keep you guessing what will happen next which keeps you on edge. As long as you are guessing you are enjoying the drama. If the cast can keep you involved their job is accomplished and the movie, TV show, book, etc may be the next big hit.
Drama allows normal every day people to experience the excitement of a way of life they would not ever want to live in reality. Drama is a safe way to see the bad side of town, the gruesome plots of murder and attack, the nasty divorce, an excess of violence and sex, etc. You can relate to the characters through their trials but have no bruises of abuse or unhappiness of being homeless to show for it. Drama gets your adrenaline pumping and feelings raging. You root for the good guy hoping he will destroy the bad. Drama has twists and turns that keep you interested in how the outcome is going to be: will the kid get rescued before the kidnapper makes it out of the country and returned home or will he forever be gone from his loving mom and dad to live with an abusive neglective attacker. This is why drama sales. This is why more and more of your TV stations are airing drama filled shows. Drama is exciting, drama is unknown, drama is scary, drama makes a successful sale.
