Why the Internet is killing print journalism

One big reason the Internet is killing print journalism is the fact that there has been a monopoly on "news" for far too long. The big names have been in charge, have owned the news, and have kept others out. Many people support the underdog and they recognize and appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit of those who attempt to join this elite club.

An obvious reason is the fact that consumers now have instant, twenty-four hour per day access to information from all over the world at the click of a mouse. The information is also free in many cases, so why would people wish to buy a newspaper when they can simply scan the headlines on the Internet free of charge?

Another important issue related to this phenomenon is facts, or perhaps more accurately, the lack thereof. People don't want opinion pieces described as news. They want unadulterated facts. They don't appreciate having bias injected into stories nor do they want certain items surreptitiously omitted to influence their opinions. Most people don't want to see forged documents or altered photos, even if such things do create scandal against a political party they may oppose.

There are many reasons why the Internet is killing print journalism, but the most compelling factor is that people do not want to be told how or what to think. They don't want to be given only particular points so that they will view an event a certain way. People want the truth and they are smart enough to know what to do with it and smart enough to know when they aren't getting it.

There's competition now. Print publications better get with the program or start reserving some space online.
