I have been saving big on gas for many years with one simple trick. Instead of driving to try and get somewhere as fast as possible, I drive to try and get somewhere using as little gas as possible.
Drive Slow!, the difference in gas usage between driving 55mph and 75mph is dramatic.
Especially slow down going up hills. You can use more gas driving for a few minutes fast up a hill than in the rest of your commute.
Try to plan for hills by building up speed before you reach the base of a hill.
Coast!, you don't always need your foot on the gas. If you are coasting downhill, your gas usage is close to zero.
Run an experiment. Record the number of miles you drive on a single tank of gas. Divide the number of miles, by the number of gallons of gas you used. The result is your miles per gallon fuel efficiency.
On your next tank of gas, try modifying your driving style for better gas mileage. For the past 6 years, I have gotten about 28 miles per gallon in a 20 year old pickup truck that was supposed to get 24 miles per gallon when it was new.
Happy, safe, efficient driving!
