Frodo is not necessary the typical hero archetype, in that, he is only a small hobbit in a very big world and he has never done anything that could be considered great. Until he takes on the task of sending this evil ring back to the pits of hell. At that point, we can relate with the hero that obviously is in Frodo. He is kind, considerate, well liked and deeply cares about everyone around him. He takes on a hero's quest with open arms even knowing he will be doomed and hunted by evil forces much greater than any have seen before. He is brave and full of hope and love for his fellow man. He even offers his own life as a sacrifice to keep peace at bay. When he sees everyone arguing over the ring, he stands up to them all and tells them he will go deliver the ring. As small as he is, he is bigger than they all here are. He fights on, through the hardship, through the misery of losing Gandalf, through the unknown passages of each step he takes becoming more and more deadly. Then when the lady of the lake tells Frodo, even the smallest of men can change the path of the future even he believes in himself and stops questioning his role. He moves forward with the strength of ten men and begins to face challenges with his new sword, and bow and hammer conquering them all. He will not accept defeat as a choice. Only completing his journey will satisfy him now.
Frodo's experiences are universal to all of humankind because we are all faced with knowledge that no matter what path we take in the end it will be the same fate as all who have lived before us. We will die. It is not that we have lived that will matter but how we lived, and how we made use of our time here. All of us must venture in to the unknown paths of our future and make choices that shape that path everyday. We can either stand up to the challenges that we face or buckle under the pressure and choose not to sacrifice anything. We can choose not to be great. We all question why we are here and who we are at some point in our lives and we all must make hard decisions. We also face grief in our lives and must choose whether or not we will let ourselves become so consumed in despair it effects our lives with negative cogitations, or we can force ourselves to overcome it and use the power within ourselves to move on each day and leave the grief behind until it becomes our past. Using whatever positive energy we can take from it or them to become part of ourselves in our own journey.
