How to set up a successful photography business

by ARC IDEA CO

Created on: July 11, 2011

You love taking photos. Photography has been your passion since then. And after some time, you have considered to market as your source of income. You have decided to start a photography business of your own. After you have done all the necessary things, like setting up the props, creating a portfolio, saving money for the capital and creating a website for your clients, you are still clueless on how you can start your business. What you really need is a business plan.

Here are the things that you need to consider when creating your photography business plan.

Name

Think of the name of your business. A name that is simple and easy to remember is a good name. Your clients will remember the name easily. To avoid confusion, do not use names that are sounding like other business in the same field. People will sometimes go for that business, instead of yours.

Location

One thing that is needed in a business is the location. Think of the space that you need for your business. Think of the props, lobby or waiting area and the space for your indoor shoot. Also, consider the location of your studio. Make sure that it is accessible and has a good human traffic. You don’t want to locate your studio with few people passing by.

Design of your studio

Think of the design that is appropriate for your business. You may consider having a plain design to hang the photos on the wall so that the customers can view them easily.

Workers

You may want to have workers to help you with the business. It is tedious if you will be handling all the business matters on your own. Find dedicated workers. You may want to advertise on newspapers or on online forums and job sites.

Schedule

Consider the opening and closing schedules of your studio. If you already have workers, arrange their work shifts, to make it more orderly.

Backdrops

Of course, you need backgrounds. You need different backdrops for different themes that your clients will require. Have backdrops that are having flat colors and also equip some with sceneries. There will be some clients who would prefer sceneries like waterfall or scenic mountains.

Make up and accessories

These are for the people who will be taken for the shot. These are either for the clients or for their models. This is to ensure that they look their best during the photo shoot.

Professional charges

Before coming up with the pricing, you need to think of the prices and fees that you will charge to your clients. The pricing consideration will take into account the operational costs like shop rental and staff wages. Do some research on the prices that local competitors to come up with the most reasonable, yet competitive price for your services.

Advertise

After making sure that everything has been settled, you need to have your studio advertised. Advertisements help your business a lot, as people become informed with the services that you offer. Make sure that you leave a little mystery in your advertisement to have people curious on your services.

Opening of your business

Attract your would-be customers by holding an opening ceremony. It is best that you have your first customer before opening up the studio for business. Through that, you won’t be losing so much money.
