I must be a glutton for punishment. Being a Royals fan, you are in a constant state of heartbreak. Kansas City is a small market and can not contend with large markets like New York or Chicago. In the last ten years, the Royals have filled their team with players looking to earn a roster spot. This year the AL Central is stocked with playoff hopefuls and the Royals are spectators in the race. They have not made the playoffs since winning the World Series in 1985. After winning the World Series, the Royals saw some of their best players leave for a bigger paycheck or retire.

My favorite Royals player of all-time is George Brett. There has not been a more passionate player in the history of the team. This passion was always apparent, most notably when a home-run was voided after finding that he has pine tar too high on his bat. I still have never seen anyone run out of the dugout towards an umpire faster than George Brett. Billy Martin, the manager of the Yankees, pulled a rule that no one ever paid any attention to and used it to his advantage. He made up his mind that if Brett ever hit a home-run against his team, he will show the umpire that his pine tar is too high on his bat. The pine tar rule was put in effect during the World War when pine tar was limited. The Yankees ended up winning that game, but Brett went on to a Hall of Fame career.

The Royals future depends on one player. Alex Gordon, who is the #1 overall prospect in the entire minor league, was a monster coming out of the University of Nebraska. We may not see Gordon much this season. He will most likely make his debut at some point in September. He should see more time in 2008 and probably start everyday by then. Many have already put the title of the next George Brett on Gordon, who is also a third baseman. Gordon could be the savior in Kansas City and lead this team to the next level.

The future looks very good for the Royals and as a fan, it's about time. I want the prime talent and the thrill of watching the team I love, actually win some games. 2007 will be a long season. I have already realized that the division is loaded with talent and the Royals are still a few years away. The AL Central runs in cycles and the Royals turn to contend should be soon. I'm just patiently waiting for our time.
