Learning to meditate

by Eugene Pitout

Created on: July 11, 2011

Meditation is not just a mental way to focus one's mind in a spiritual way. It’s much more than that but for beginners, focus is the best exercise. The good thing is that meditation is so vast you cannot expect to explain it all in one sitting but one can begin with simple basic meditation and expand from there.

The spiritual world that impacts the physical world, normally works like we do in the physical but upsidedown or paradoxical. In the physical world when I ask you to focus it normally entails a strenuous exercise of really pushing oneself to remain in focused mode. In the spiritual reality in order to focus you are asked to relax and have joy.

Golden rule: If you are not enjoying meditation, you are doing it wrong. Meditation is not a chore or a drill. It is a relaxed way to gain infinite focusing power by centering in body mind and spirit. So how de we focus then?

To focus spiritually you will have to calm your mind. People who don’t meditate are like a naked light bulb hanging in the dark. It will illuminate its immediate surroundings if only just, and one deals with the things that it can illuminate in all directions as it comes at you from the dark.

In meditation you put a reflective dish around the globe and you focus it into a powerful beam to illuminate far into any direction on exactly the one thing that is under concern.

But how do we do this? Know that you are already sending all that light out into nowhere so all we do now is to send all those beams in one direction. It is so easy to do this in meditation that it often baffles one as to why we never thought of it sooner.

You obtain optimal focus by relaxing the mind completely. In meditation you tell your mind to “just for now” or “just for the next 30 minutes” to stop thinking. Now many people use many methods to get the mind to stop thinking. Sooner or later the meditator will know what makes the mind wander off and find ways to bring it back or keep it relaxed.

In preparation for meditation you would do well to do whatever it takes to calm the mind in the gross physical world. Get a notebook or diary and make notes of everything you are afraid to forget. Thus you know you can let go of your mind because you will get back to your list later. Whatever is going to be on your mind, take steps to clear it for the next half hour or so.

There are walking meditations where you can use the rhythm of your steps to calm your mind, there are repetitive mantras and
