Memoirs: My summer vacation

by Barbara Writes

Created on: July 11, 2011

I took my first vacation to the beach with the family after me and my hubby separated in 2009. He thought it a great idea to take us on vacation after years of pleading to do something as a family. So he arranges the finances so it would be possible to go and have a really good time taking in the sights during the day and walking the beach in the afternoon.

Enjoying windy, damp, air under darkish skies, we watch the waves roll in as the cool water inch closer and closer soaking our feet. Overjoyed at seeing the beach waters for the first time; I ran to the water's edge, with my wobbly legs, splashing the cool waters tickling my toes and encircling my bare feet right up my knobby knees. I ran in to ocean with my dress high above my knees like a little child spinning in the cool, breezy air. Never before in 50 years, had I seen the power of the beach’s magnificent up so close.

My shattered body has been beset with aches and restricted motion for 5 years. After this three day vacation, my body is enlivened, liken to my girlish carefree days. As the squally, breeze dank my skin, fanned my hair, and propelled my sartorial, I giggled, chattered, radiated with joyfulness, waving at astonished faces reveling in my innocence at being on the beach’s strand for the first time in my adult life.

Before long tramping in the forgiving, cool, sand caused my wobbly legs and knobby knees to wane, thus, in the affectionate arms of honey, I stumbled back to grand strand and showered the sand from my feet and legs. Exhausted, wiped out, and entirely void of the power to walk, I sat on a bench awaiting my honey to bring the car around.

After a short ride to restaurant, we feast with kids and grand-kids, before heading to a lovely, cozy, hotel suite we rented for the night. Before bedding down, I wandered downstairs for a 30 minute spa in the hot tub by the pool with my honey. He took several pictures of me posing in the hot tub in my new, blue, too expensive, one piece bathing suit he bought me that day from a store located on strand. After a fun toss in the hot tub, I klutzily walked back to my room thinking about Neopoet, Helium, PoetrySoup, and Script Ode. Once there, I showered, put on my new, silk, and pink with red roses, pajamas.

Finally, I got my tired body into the comfy, beautifully made, bed and turned the TV to a station reporting some type of news. Then I got on my laptop, using the hotel’s free Wi-Fi to read through my e-mails and memos before closing
