Free summer activity ideas for couples

Free. The word conjures up joy in the hearts of those struggling to make ends meet. Many married couples find themselves burdened down by debt and feel guilty about enjoying date nights because of sorry bank accounts. However, with a little forethought, a couple can enjoy special times together without spending a single penny.

Take a walk

Strolling hand in hand opens the opportunity for conversation. A walk around the block or along a community walking trail gives a couple the time to share about their day and discuss future plans.

Bicycle ride

Many communities offer biking trails for families to enjoy. Grab the bike out of the garage, strap on a helmet, and pedal your way to health.

Camping

Many couples enjoy slipping off to a campground and spending a few days away from their hectic lives. However, most public camping spots require payment to rent space. Instead of dishing out funds to enjoy the great outdoors, ask family and friends that own property in the country for a spot on their land to pitch a tent. If no such opportunities exist, turn off the cellphones and create a campground in your own backyard. Use the barbecue to roast hotdogs and make smores and long after the sun sets, roll out the sleeping back in the yard and marvel at the night sky.

Free concerts

Many organizations host free events to introduce the community to their work or mission. Around the Fourth of July, Churches often advertise free concerts and treat entire communities to firework displays. Take advantage of such an offer. Not only can you enjoy a night of free entertainment, but as a couple, you can connect with others from your city.

Fly a kite

Many families own kites. Rummage through the closet, drag out the kite and fly it at a local park. Once in the air, watching the apparatus dart and dance in the breeze promotes a moment of tranquility together.

Cloud watch

Spread a blanket down on the ground. Lay down and stare up at the sky. With a little imagination, cloud formations become the heads of famous people or exotic animals. See who can spot the most interesting shape or the cloud that looks most like a favorite relative. This activity promises much fun and laughter.

With an economy resting on the precipice of total collapse, take time to energize your relationship with dates costing nothing. A free date in this troubled time can be labeled only one thing. Priceless.
