I was a youngster in ballet. I stuck with it for a couple of years and loved it.
I'm now 21 and am starting to get back into formal ballet training.
I don't remember how my parents decided to put me into the class, but I know they listened to me and encouraged me throughout the program.
The important thing to consider about putting your child into formal ballet training, isn't about the poise and grace and skill he/she'll get from it- those are all very positive things- it's about whether or not they enjoy it. Does it encourage them to expand their minds and bodies? Is it teaching them in other areas other than ballet? Is it expanding who they are and helping them grow?
Ballet is a very demanding dance and youth can thrive and accomplish a lot with the right class and instructor. But it can just as well be demeaning and discouraging for them as well. Know your child and be attune to what they're feeling about the class.
