There is always a great journey to be taken, and in Australia the Great Southern Railway provides some excellent itineraries for those who like to travel at a slower pace.
The Great Southern Railway has four classic routes. With their beautifully appointed carriages and cabins, it is the best way to see remote parts of Australia that would otherwise be missed from a flying itinerary. Whether it be the experience of complete nothingness of the Northern Territory outback, or the beautiful historic countryside of southern Australia, there is a rail journey waiting to be discovered.
The Ghan
One of the most well known luxury rail journeys taking you to some of the most remote parts of outback Australia, The Ghan is named after the cameleers that assisted the development and discoveries of inland Australia during the 1800s. It travels between Adelaide and Darwin passing through the Flinders Ranges, Alice Springs and Katherine, providing passengers with the travel experiences that contrast to any stereotypes of what constitute Australia. The trip takes two nights in each direction, covering 1,846 miles, and costs from AU$750 one way from Adelaide to Darwin (and vice versa) in a recliner seat, or upgrade to Gold or Platinum class cabin services for accomodation that include food and drinks.
Indian Pacific
A beautiful train journey that takes you from coast to coast, the Indian Pacific connects travelers from one ocean to the other as its name suggests. The Indian Pacific travels from Sydney to Perth via Adelaide, through some of Australia’s most active farming landscapes and communities. The journey takes three nights in each direction, covering 2,698 miles, and costs from AU$755 one way from Sydney to Perth (and vice versa) in a recliner seat, or upgrade to Gold or Platinum class cabin service for prices that include food and drinks.
The Overland
The Overland is a recently refurbished rail link between Melbourne and Adelaide and is mostly used to link up with the luxury services The Ghan and Indian Pacific. The route passes through some classic Australian towns such as Murray Ridge, Horsham and Geelong, giving passengers an insight into rural living and a chance to visit some rarely visited places. The Overland is a great alternative to flying and is suitable for anyone who isn’t in a hurry to end their holidays. The trips run three times weekly during the day and take approximately 12 hours, covering 513 miles and cost from AU$95 for a standard seat. A more comfortable alternative is available at extra cost.
The Southern Spirit
An epic journey taking you between Adelaide and Brisbane travelling through four Australian states, The Southern Spirit is a trip of a lifetime waiting to be taken. The journey takes five nights and passengers are given opportunities to join organized day trips along the way. Gold and Platinum services are available on this route. Rail travel is the most comfortable and relaxing way to explore the parts of Australia that are rarely visited. Whether you are looking for an Aboriginal cultural experience through the Northern Territory or want to wander through wildflowers and river regions of south west Australia, the Great Southern Railway of Australia has a route that will take you to where you want to go.
Combine your journey with a holiday package including hotels and tours to enhance your travel experience. More information on the Great Southern Railway of Australia can be found on their website: www.gsr.com.au
