How to keep your anger under control at home

Losing your temper is usually followed by regret. No one wants to blow up at their family members. Even in the cases where a stern response is needed if you let your anger get out of control it just creates more issues.

Anger is sometimes warranted and appropriate given the situation. If your son or daughter is caught with drugs in the house, for example, it is understandable that you will be angry with them. But what causes issues is when we let our anger get out of control or when we let frustrations from life get to us so much that we blow up and take it out on our family.

It is important to realize that anger is a normal emotion. It is not always bad to get angry. In fact, in some cases it would be weird for you not to be angry. However, how we handle our anger is very important. Anger alerts us that there is something bothering us. Something has happened that causes us to feel hurt, betrayed, wronged, or that some injustice was done either to yourself or someone else. It is never good to lose control of our anger and lash out at people. Often in those moments of rage we will say or do things we will regret and that we would never normally say or do.

So how can you keep your anger in check in the home?

Make sure to have some time alone to yourself each day. If you are constantly hounded by people in your home, at your job or as you go about your day chances are you will be more high strung. We all need some quiet time to destress and allow ourselves to process what we are thinking and feeling. Set aside some time each day to just relax. It may be only 10 minutes each morning before your kids get up where you can sit and have a cup off coffee and read the paper or maybe it's after the kids go to bed in the evening you take some time to read a book or journal. Many people feel they are too busy, their schedules too packed to take time for themselves but this is not the case. You can find 10 minutes, at the least, to set aside for your mental health if you make it a priority. The benefit of having time to yourself is that your nerves will not be on edge so when situations happen you will not fly off the handle. You may get mad by you will be more in control of your anger cause you are in a better place and not completely stressed out.

Be active. A lot of our frustrations, anxieties and things we get upset about can be calmed by exercise, something as simple as taking a walk around the block for 5 minutes can make us feel so much better.
