Chord Overstreet is leaving Glee

Created on: July 07, 2011

As the curtain falls on hit television series Glee’s most recent concert tour, other acts are coming to an end as well. Chord Overstreet, who was introduced to the Fox television show as Sam Evans in the beginning of season two as an athletic student transferring into McKinley High, will be leaving the show and will not return to season three as a full-time cast member, though sources say that he may still make guest star appearances.

On his Twitter page, Overstreet acknowledged and confirmed the news when he posted, “Well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh.” No reason for his dismissal from the show has been given by Overstreet or Fox.

Diehard fans have been relieved to find out that Sam will thankfully not be written out of the show due to tragedy or death, although plans have not been made as of yet in regards to how Sam will make his exit.

Overstreet is swapping places with the actors who play Blaine and Mike, Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr. Both teenage heartthrobs will have regular spots on the Glee team in the fall.

In reaction to this news, Overstreet has experienced a surge of Twitter followers and purchases of his cover of Travis McCoy’s song “Billionaire” on iTunes. His fans have even gone as far as petitioning and publicly displaying how upset they are about this change in the show’s direction.

However, while Overstreet’s time with Glee may be close to an end, his opportunities are definitely not. As far as upcoming opportunities, he will appear in a film that is due to be released in September called Warrior. He has also caught the eyes of some big names in Hollywood, such as the director of Justin Beiber’s documentary Never Say Never Jon M. Chu, who has stated that he “can’t wait to work with [Overstreet] one day.”

As Glee leaves its quarterback Sam Evans behind in the upcoming season, many new advances are being made in the show, as the producers did not want the cast to end up as the ageless characters of so many television shows.

Series co-creator Ryan Murphey told host Ryan Seacrest that he was planning on most of the show’s current characters graduating by the end of next season in order to keep the character’s lives moving forward as they head into the world.

Sam Evans will surely be missed by his devoted fans on Glee, but when the show returns on Sept. 20 in the dawn of the much-anticipated senior year for many McKinley students, viewers can anticipate exciting new changes as well.
