Miserable marriages have been known to exist for decades, eating away at couples like a cancer so I am not giving advice on making a union last for a long time but rather how to invite an enjoyable, productive collaboration of two souls on the same path.

The advice is very simple and can be followed in one easy step:

1. Do not build a wall between you and the one you love.

When you say something hurtful to a person that you love and respect and from whom you seek acceptance, you have cemented into place the first brick of the "wall of hate" between you. That brick, no matter how much forgiveness is sought nor given, can never be removed. It is permanent.

As the wall gets a firm foundation it becomes easier to build until you reach the point where no amount of communication can get over or around the barrier that you have erected. Whether it takes 1 year or 100 years to complete, or whether a divorce proceeding is the result is irrelevant. The happiness that you sought with your mate is gone.

Strong, emotionally stable, high self esteemed individuals do not need to be right all of the time and never say something to diminish the stature of their mate. To the contrary; praise, understanding, compassion and support are the tools of soul mates.
