I have been writing as a freelancer for about two years now. Times have been rough sometimes and some days were better, but everyday taught me something about this profession. If I have to advise and encourage a freelancer, here is what I would say.
My advice is, before you being your journey as a freelancer consider these:
#Do you love to write? Yes do you love to write, sitting on a chair for endless hours while your friends and family may be having fun or enjoying some other activities. Writing is an art and takes lots of love and patience so you have to be able to make sacrifices and be persistent.
# How skillful are you as a writer and as a manager? Being a freelancer means you have to do almost everything on your own. There is no editor to help you sort out the paragraph or a PR manager to market you. So if your writing skill is not up to the match and you have little managerial skills, you will find out that it is tough being a freelancer.
# And yes, don't forget that you need to keep yourself fresh and ahead of the curve. So reading other writers works, updating your skills through writing lessons or training and also networking with other authors is very important. To write what people will read you need to stay current, networking with other writers and reading new publications will help you do just that.
On words of encouragement, all I have to say is that
#It takes tremendous courage to embark upon a journey to be a freelancer. You are now "free" to pursue your dreams and aspirations, you are the one who will write your future. So don't be afraid to make mistakes or take a breather for a while.
#Always remember that writing is an art and being an artist takes lots of love and patience.
# Stay focused. You may miss a party or a gathering at a friend's house but that mind boggling article you are writing will give you more peace than the wild parties. So don't be afraid to make little sacrifices. Eventually you will get big rewards.
# And finally congratulate yourself. Not many people are brave enough to take charge of their destiny and march on their own, which you have done being a freelance writer.
