The number one thing Red Sox fans know about is heart break. They are definitely true die-hard fans if they watch every game, get their excitement revved up until it's play-off season, and be let down nearly every time.
The Boston Red Sox reside in the oldest operating major league ballpark in the nation, Fenway Park. This place holds so much history, it's no wonder that Red Sox Nation holds this place to be so sacred. The Red Sox won their first world series as the "Boston Americans" back in 1903 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They also encountered what would be seen as a curse for 86 years by the Great Bambino, aka Babe Ruth himself.
Boston fans take this game seriously, and probably more so than most fans of "America's Pastime". The perfect example of this is the animosity between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
In 1918, the Red Sox won their fifth World Series with the help of George Herman Ruth as their pitcher. However, in 1920 he was sold to the Yankees, which marked a turning point in Red Sox history. While the Red Sox were struggling to even make it in the play-offs, the Yankees went on to win a staggering 26 World Series. This, of course, upset Boston fans immensly, and they attributed it to "The Curse of the Great Bambino".
This is why when in 2004 the Boston Red Sox defeated the Evil Empire known as the New York Yankees and won the World Series against the Cardinals, the Northeast nearly erupted into chaos. Boston fans were celebrating, and Yankee fans were sobbing. My, my how the world turns.
Now Red Sox fans know about keeping the faith. No matter what happens, we will continue to fill that ballpark and verbally destroy our contenders. That's what makes Boston fans so brutally unique. We don't care if they strike out a million times if they can manage to win that one game that counts.
