Reading as a hobby: Escape in a good book

When I was in third grade, it was decided that I was not reading at grade level, so I was placed in a reading development class. Little did they realize that they were creating a monster. For all of that year, I was given help to improve my reading skills. My teachers and my foster parents read with me, read to me, and listened to me read. Every free moment I had was dedicated to reading. By the end of the school year, I was addicted. I have been devouring books ever since. By junior high school I had started writing my own short stories and poetry. In high school, I had my own required reading list because I had already read the books chosen for the curriculum. I served many detentions for reading during class, I spent the detention time reading or writing. Reading has helped me through many bad times. I have used books as an escape, as a weapon, and as a tool. Any situation that must be faced, has probably been written about by at least one other person who has been there, done that. Any thing you want to learn about, can be learned from any perspective, be it factual, fantasy, historical, fictional, and on and on. Books do not have commercials, they do not have air times that you will miss. You will never miss the end of a book because the VCR died or you ran out of tapes. You can re-read a book because and when you want to, not just because there is nothing else on. I started reading to my children as soon as they were born, and never stopped until they could read all by themselves. I have tried to encourage some self control over reading in class though. I am a firm believer that reading makes learning easier and more fun. When my 15 year old has a bad day at school, she doesn't do drugs or drink, or fight, she reads. I would rather my child lose track of time in a good book, than for her to lose herself.
