Christian reflections on the death penalty

Does God ever change?

Not according to the Bible. 1Samuel 15:29 "Also the Glory of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind." Psalms 15:4
In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear the LORD; He swears to his own hurt and does not change; Psalms 55:19 God will hear and answer them Even the one who sits enthroned from of old Selah. With whom there is no change, And who do not fear God. Malachi 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. There are several other verses as well but you get the point.

If God doesn't change than how can He offer capital punishment in the Old Testament and somehow it's taken off the table in the New Testament. When Jesus died and arose 3 days later it wasn't to end the law but in Him it was fulfilled. Luke 24:44
Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." If capital punishment is now off the table and Jesus completely disagreed why wouldn't He have taken the thief off the cross next to him whom He told in Luke, Luke 23:43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." If God had become strong opponents of the capital punishment movement, why not show us that with the conversion of the thief. Why not take the thief off the cross. Why not translate the Apostles, like Elijah, before they were killed for their beliefs/faith. Jesus had to die on the cross to fulfill the law, but why wouldn't the New Testament writers explicitly condemn it? Because God doesn't change.
The Law created standards for the courts of Israel but weren't for personal retaliation. When Jesus said "turn the other check" it has about how you personally handled the situation not how the courts were to deal with it. It's alright if you disagree with capital punishment but that doesn't mean that you can use the Bible to prove your case.

God never changes.
