There are arguments on both sides for formal art classes for children. On the plus side, these could be summarised as follows:
Art is often regarded as a second-rate academic subject. I'm sure my school was not unique in regarding art, music and drama being for those students who were not academically gifted, whilst maths and physics were the "brainy" subjects. This view needs to be counted.
People have different ways of interacting with the world. Without getting too deep, we can divide learners into linear thinkers and lateral thinkers. The lateral thinkers will always be at a disadvantage when it comes to Maths, Chemistry, etc. Many students who dislike these subjects thrive when it comes to Art.
Art is an excellent subject for getting through to students the message that learning and fun are not mutually exclusive and can, in fact, be one and the same thing.
For students with dyslexia or other such barriers to learning, art can be a tremendous way to build self-esteem and allow them to see themselves as valued as students.
This may be heresy in today's society, but schools should be more than machines churning out employees. Art can be a wonderful means of enriching our life experience.
For those who consider schools as nothing more than machines to provide a workforc, there is also an answer. The UK has one of the world's strongest economies. The Arts - although regarded as of no value to many of an economic bent - are a huge export earner for the UK. Fashion, music, literature, design etc are hugely successful for the UK.
On the negative side, one could make the following points:
Let's be honest, a lot of art teachers are excellent artists, but not great teachers. Many art teachers would rather be making a living from their art. however, as it is extremely difficult to do this, many enter teaching as a second-best option. Also, it is difficult for those with a natrual artisitic skills to understand and nurture those who lack a natural ability.
Many people are just not interested in Art. Why force it upon them, if they do not want to do it?
