A buddy of mine and I were riding along in his car the other day and the topic came up. Actually, was I to be completely honest, he was pretty upset. Both he and a black guy were vying for the affections of the same lady at work, a white lady.

First of all, let me establish that this friend of mine is not at all racist. He is a decent individual and quite religious. The whole "love thy neighbor" thing. However, as we drove along in his car, I noticed that he was irate. He could not understand why black men couldn't just stick to black women. According to him, on more than one occasion he had found himself in competition, not with another white man, but a black man. Such confrontations, he said, seemed to follow him like the plague.

Had this friend of mine not been so upset over this, I would have damaged my spleen laughing at him. But I could clearly see that he was serious and that this was really bothering him. So I sat there silently as he vented. Later on when I was alone, I gave his frustration some thought and came up with the following assessment.

Since the arrival of Africans to this country as slaves, they have been oppressed and taught that they are an inferior race of people. In some way shape or form, this has been going on for the past four hundred years. Though I, like any reasonable person, would admit that in recent years changes have begun to take place, I can equally acknowledge that a mere fifty years cannot hold the candle to nearly four hundred years of indoctrination. During that time, the black man has unconsciously been watching white men glamorize their women. Everywhere the black man turned his head, from the time of his birth till old age, he was bombarded with images of the beautiful, innocent, gentle, loving and kind white woman in movies, on television, on posters, in commercials, everywhere. He was trained to see her as being on a pedestal, better than all other women. Again, this was not intentional. There was no shadowy meeting of white men to conspire to get black men to prefer white women. The television ads, movie posters and fair-skinned mannequins in the expensive designer clothing store windows were for white people to see and admire. For hundreds of years, black people were invisible, hidden away in either the kitchen or out in the fields.

But because black men were out in the fields didn't mean they weren't around to see "Miss KinKade" in her pretty white dress, trotting along with her long, blond hair flowing
