Some arguments against and for.

Yes, they are overrated, because:

1. Most of them are paid ridiculously large amounts of money weekly or monthly, which ordinary morals do not earn even in a year
2. They get too much attention, worshipping and idolising
3. They earn large amounts of money from endorsing ads and campaigns
4. With an exception of Thierry Henry, you get disappointed in them the minute they open their mouths.
5. They still paid when they are not picked to play or are injured, i.e., are not doing what they are supposed to do.

but, then again:
1. There is nothing more beautiful and exiting than a good game of football, and millions of fans are willing to part with their money in order to enjoy the game.
2. When a talented footballer takes your breath away with a beautiful goal or a pass, one is sure that they are worth all the money they are paid.
3. They create memories and special moments for generations to remember and cherish, moments, which set hearts racing for years and years
4. They often become inspiration and role models for young kids, to take up sports and exercise.
