One of the most interesting facts about landscape gardening is that every landscape in every garden, even in every season, is different.
Landscaping is such a rewarding thing to do, and drawing out plans on paper or even using the software packages available these days do help, although nothing is as good as spending time outside and establishing what you want to create in the way of a landscape.
Flat uninteresting gardens
These can be enhanced with structures or structural planting. It is actually amazing how a landscape can be broken into areas by hedging plants, and how a flat garden can be given substance and shape just by wise choice of plants, being sure of the line you wish your garden to have. For example, a winding path works well to create a more interesting landscape, and planting trees and large bushes can make the design even more interesting. The kind of structural things you can add to a flat garden that help in the design are;
1. Patios surrounded by pots of coloured plants
2. Decking breaks areas into different levels
3. Pots used wisely and appropriately placed can add a wealth of colour.
4. Bird baths, and even dovecotes can add so much interest to the garden.
Landscapes for children
Here the ideas are as endless as the imagination. Creating wild life areas with your children will encourage them to participate and take notes of wildlife. Here, ponds are not that wise unless protected, though birdwatching areas can easily be created. Play areas for kids are easy, although thought should be given to what kind of surface to use that is kid friendly and will not hurt them if they fall. Swings, slides, see saws, etc., are structural and can add depth to the childrens part of the garden, as well as sandpits which can be surrounded by tropical planting to camouflage the kids area of the garden.
Rockeries
Rockeries add depth to a garden and on a layered garden are ideal for in between different heights. Here, alpine plants will thrive.
Flower beds
Raised flower beds are a wonderful way of keeping gardening easier as you get older, and here railway sleepers can be used around the new borders, keeping them neat, though one should be sure always that there is adequate drainage.
Ponds
Ponds are fairly easy to create either with pre-formed plastic inserts or the old fashioned way with sand in the base, and then lining the pond with plastic, although always be aware that stagnant water is not healthy water, so that installing water features that keep the water oxygenated are a good idea.
Hidden gardens
It is always nice to create a hidden area in a garden, a private place where you can go and sit and enjoy the outdoors. This could be a walled garden, or simply an area created away from the house, and away from neighbours.
Hedging
The visual effect that hedging can have is amazing too, and here there are so many colors to choose from these days that the imagination can soar.
Landscaping is personal. It's the means that a human being has of making their mark on their little bit of God's earth, and the limits really are only the limits of the imagination.
Be wild, be inventive, and enjoy your landscaping experience.
