To a certain extent, you do make your own luck. However, there are some things that will happen, which you will have no control over. For example, the weather. Will it be sunny or will it rain? Planning to go out for a picnic is a gamble. Even if the day starts out nice, there is a chance it will rain and spoil your day.
Another concept you have no control over is what other people do. Sure, you can start the day in a positive mood, but if you run into someone who doesn't like you, the chances are that they will screw you over. Of course, you can try and stay out of their way, but that would mean staying cooped up in your house all day.
And of course, there's the national lottery. The majority of us buy our tickets in the hope that we will win something. Do you become a millionaire or do you lose yet another pound/dollar or whatever unit of money you use? It's out with your hands. Maybe you could avoid walking under ladders or perhaps pick up a penny that you find lying on the ground, but does that really work?
The best thing you can do is be nice to everyone you meet, even if they are horrible to you in the hope that through karma, your luck will be amazing.
