There is something about the smoking of tires and the burning of fuel in the hot days of the summer that make a man excited. However, the general NASCAR fan isn't just any ordinary man, the general NASCAR fan is a true to the bone southerner. If it wasn't for the south, NASCAR never would be as big as it is today. The south has always had a passion for vehicles and speed and watching NASCAR is no different. While the north is preoccupied with quantum physics and nuclear engineering, the south has a raw fascination with driving 50 cars in a really large circle for hours. When I think about the south and NASCAR, I like to imagine a cat with one of those circular tunnels with the ball in the middle. No matter how many times that ball goes around the circle, the cat just keeps on watching it, poking at it a bit, encouraging it to keep on going. The south is the same, they figure if they setup enough BBQ grills in the back of RUSTY their beat up old Chivvvy, they might be able to encourage the GODS OF RACE LEGEND to bring DALE EARNHART back from the dead and let him win another race for the CONFEDERACY errr Southern America.
Somehow, over time NASCAR has managed to become so embedded in the culture of the south, that now it truly has begun to bring families together for something other than wife beating, squirrel hunting, and frog gigging. Families find themselves glued to the television, everyone in the neighborhood over, eating BBQ everything, deep friend pickles, and buckets of Okra. NASCAR is no longer just a sport in the south, it has become an important part of their social and cultural makeup, so much so that you can't go anywhere in the south during a NASCAR race without hearing radios blaring the sportscast, seeing televisions turned to it, or just hearing people walking by in general talking about it. Everywhere you go, you'll see flags of everyone's favorite racer, and regardless of your background, you are a true NASCAR fan and nothing else matters. It has been way for the south to forget their differences and come together, forgetting about all of their problems for a few hours of entertainment.
NASCAR is popular because it IS THE SOUTH, it represents a much larger picture than anyone could ever imagine, and has given the south something to be proud of, something to look forward to.
