you've found Mr or Miss "Perfect". Are they really? Okay, I'm not advocating asking "what are your views on marriage/children/marmite/the bomb" on the first date, but fairly early on, you should be forming a kind of mental Venn diagram as to where you overlap, where your common ground is, not to mention if there are any areas where you really don't like their views, and know in your heart of hearts that this isn't forever. Also identify if there are areas of knowledge you each have where the other has none - personally, I think it's important to learn from each other, and it certainly gives you plenty to discuss after the first few months of learning all the "surface" things.
Once you get to date four or five, start tentatively digging for the information that you need to make that decision. If your potential "perfect" partner really doesn't want to get married, or have children, or has strong views on something else life-changing, you have to weigh up what you are prepared to compromise on, and what you can't compromise on.
Many people say they fell in love at first sight, or they "knew" they'd met the right person the first time they saw them. It's my opinion that that's a fair way to become a divorce statistic. Those that say "well, we were friends for months, and then we realised that we were in love", I think, congratulations, send me an invitation to your Silver Wedding Anniversary.
