I am a Microsoft fan.
I have had many debates with high end power users, who are dead set against using Windows for any reason. I tell them that if it were not for Microsoft, we would not even be using this chat room, or whatever we are communicating on. These heated discussions often go on for what seems like forever. They are generally friendly, but have at times become rather hostile. I don't hold that against them.
Another hotly debated topic, which I always choose to refrain from, is the PC versus MAC controversy. I have never owned, or used a MAC, and I am sure they are fine digital instruments. I cannot debate what I do not have knowledge of. I can say that the new MAC commercials, while cute, are not totally accurate. I don't feel "less than" because I own a PC. I do respect MAC users though.
This article is about a topic relating to Vista, the new operating system. I have only had a brief encounter with it, and have read articles about the subject. My first thoughts are that I am not convinced that anyone needs to be in a big hurry to make a changeover. Let me try to explain.
I have been a software tester for a long time. Earlier in my career, I was doing computer configurations. What that has to do with is making software behave properly within the hardware environment of a system. My job was to insure that the bugs were found, and the system was operating efficiently with the software. Tweaking it you might say. So I own tons of software, hundreds and hundreds of applications. Everything you can think of, I probably have in my database. So here is my real issue with this operating system from Microsoft; Why do I even have to be concerned about all of my hundreds of applications possibly not working in Vista? That is outrageous! Backward compatibility has been the hallmark of every successive operating system so far. Why all of a sudden are we now worried that our high priced software is no longer going to work for us?
My tech friends would tell you it is a Bill Gates scam, and I am not so sure I would disagree. I have been a staunch proponent of Microsoft for years, even knowing that they have taking the public for a ride once or twice. Like Windows ME, and some argue that even Windows 98 was a rip off! Windows XP is one of the best they have ever produced, in my opinion. What I have been reading about Vista is not very promising. Being a musician, I will not even be able to use my current sound card in Vista because of their internal coding for recording sound! For me, that is not something I can live with. I paid a lot of money for this card, so why would I want to throw all of that down the drain for some operating system that really is not promising me anything that my current OS (Operating System) is not already capable of?
If you already own Vista, I think that is great. It is there, you will get what you need out of it. If you currently own XP, I would not rush out and get this operating system quite yet. The reason is; this OS may be the biggest Microsoft hoax of them all! My tech friends are really gonna let me know about it, you can believe that!
