I manage of staff of approximately 40. In terms of value to the Department, I would raise one point that has huge relevance to answering this question:

Staff training! Staff training! Staff training!

I have members of my team who were experienced and well-qualified when they wer first appointed, but who have done nothing since. Unfortunately, with the pace of change in today's society, it does not take long to sink form one of the most experienced and best-qualifed staff members to one of the least valuable.

Things change all the time and people need to keep abreast of these changes. What I would recommend everyone to do is to access as much organised staff training as possible (the point of some of it may not seem clear, but putting on staff training is hugely expensive and is always put on for valuable reasons). Further, people need to take responsibility for their own continuous professional development (CPD). This CPD is a major part of working life, nowadays. Those who don't recognise this will make themselves fairly obsolete fairly quickly.
