What you need to know when considering an online education

Is an Online Education right for YOU?

If you currently stay at home, or even work home, you may be thinking, "Gee, why not study from home too?" If that's the case, and you are very serious and determined about pursuing education through an Online Institution, find out first if it's right for you.

It may sound comfortable and easy, but don't be fooled; it can actually be pretty daunting. If you do not have the right qualities or feel comfortable studying independently of a professor and peers, you may in time regret your decision. Just because you are schooling from the comfort of home, where you do other things, doesn't mean it's going to be your cup of tea.

As a person who has studied online, I ask you to consider the following to determine if long distance learning is your best fit:

Will you be dealing with a barrage of daily distractions?

What's it like in your family and social life? Do you receive or allow a constant stream of visitors to your home? Do they show up unannounced? Do you have small children that will constantly need your attention? Pets? You need to be good at tuning out a phone ringing, a visitor, birds chirping, construction workers on your street etc. All these things are absent in a classroom, yet at home they can threaten the very success of your online education. You'll probably have to set some new house rules for your family to adhere to when you are studying, that can help minimize the amount of distractions you will be faced with.

Must be able to Study Independently

This is very important! At home, with no professors and no students, you lack that "team" support so-to-speak. As an online student, you should be able to work independently and be capable of self-motivation, as you will never be face-to-face with anybody. You will have to do your research alone, study alone and do your home work alone. You will have to pat your own back for your own accomplishments and encourage yourself to continue on while setting your educational goals and plans.

Procrastination take a back seat

A successful online student rarely, if ever, procrastinates. Procrastination is the biggest success killer in any facet of life. You should not be putting off assignments until after the Sunday family reunion picnic is over. Your priorities need to be straight. You should understand that although you may think you have the freedom of time to write papers and complete work and essays at your own pace, leaving what you could do today for later on, can eventually add months and in some cases maybe even years, to the completion of your studies through online education.

Good-bye Visuals and Hello Reading Comprehension

To succeed at Online Education, you also need to be adept at reading comprehension. Why? Because most online courses will have volumes of course material that you will be required to read through at a College level, again, without the guidance of a Professor and hearing him or her first hand. Some institutions may provide audio or visual aids to help you along depending on the type of class you are taking, but mostly you will be reading. This gets to be very heavy for many people and they'll quit based on that reason alone. So, the ability to comprehend large amounts of information through written text will be critical to your success long term.

All in all, be honest with yourself as you analyze whether you have some of the qualities it takes to study online from home. If you find you don't, then traditional schooling is what you need. Online learning is not for everyone. You just have to find your perfect match.
