MySpace is gaining popularity with the momentum of a runaway freight train. Everyday more and more people are discovering the website and creating profiles to keep in touch with friends, to meet new people, to promote their band or business. Profiles are wide and varied and are as individual as the person creating it.
So how do you create the perfect MySpace page? Perfection really is in the eye of the beholder. Perfection can mean many things to many people however there are a number of things you can do and avoid doing that will definitely have you well on your way to the perfect profile.
1. Your page needs to load in a timely fashion. You may be tempted to cram your page full of all types of lovely images, javascripts, widgets, links, and videos etc, but if, in doing so, your page takes 2 minutes to load people are unlikely to wait around. If you find your page is lagging try reducing the size or quantity of the images, scripts, videos etc.
2. Your page needs to be aesthetically pleasing. Nobody enjoys looking at bright green background with purple text and yellow links. Likewise if the background is very busy and the text can't be read. These thing add to the viewers frustration and they will quickly move on. An aesthetically pleasing page will encourage people to stay longer.
3. Your page needs to be interesting. Give people a reason to keep coming back and to tell their friends about your page. Interesting content is essential otherwise people will inevitably forget all about your page as soon as the leave it. Sadly many pages are let down by creators who put a lot of effort into the layout of their page and almost none into the content.
4. Utilise the blog. People will regularly return to an interesting page to read the latest blog entry. Blogging gives you the space to actively engage the people who visit your page. It allows you to express yourself, your ideas with others and gives people the opportunity to interact with you. Pages with blogs tend to be more popular than those without.
5. Your page needs to be updated regularly. There is nothing worse than information that is out of date, links that don't work or images that no longer exist. It tells people you don't care enough to update the page and in turn people will stop visiting your page.
This is by no means a definitive list of do's and don'ts however utilising these basic tips will certainly help you to create a MySpace page that people will enjoy visiting.
