Infertility treatments: Moral issues with egg and sperm donors

I do not deny that there are profound implications involved regarding the creation of a child from donated eggs and sperm, however the pros and cons, rights and wrongs, are irrelevant to those who are childless and simply aching to be parents.

To discuss whether or not it is immoral to create a life in this way is to belittle the agony that childless couples go through. To my mind the only people who are in a position to examine the moral issues are those who need infertility treatments. It is all too easy for men and women who have fulfilled their desire to procreate, to sit back, examine and pass judgment on an issue that will never affect them in person.

There is, of course, one other voice that should be heard - that of the child born as a result of egg/sperm donation. People donating or receiving eggs or sperm are aware of the intended outcome of their actions. The child, however, is an unwitting participant and is probably the most affected by the impact of any moral issues concerned. Perhaps we should ask them about the morality of their existence?
