The pros and cons of formal ballet training for youngsters

by Jo.H

Ballet classes for children is a wonderful way to let your child grow in confidence and think about their body. They develop a better posture and also learn discipline. Ballet classes will let your child make a new set of friends from the ones they see every day at school.
My daughter recently appeared on stage with her ballet school, performing for our local mayor and then at an old peoples home. She thoroughly enjoyed herself and surprised me with the level of confidence she showed on stage.
The only things that worries me about ballet classes is that children can become obsessed abot their body image and this could lead to an eating disorder. I don't think this happens at lower levels, only if your child were to take it up as a profession. Ballet dancers are by nature thin and elegant but some young children may strive to achieve this by starving themselves. Having said all that, I am in favour of children taking ballet classes so long as parents make sure their child keeps a strong body image.
