Social bookmarking can be defined as the process of sharing internet bookmarks via a web service like Yahoo!s My Web 2.0 or blogmarks. With social bookmarking, the user creates a bookmark and saves it to a social bookmarking service using tags - single key-words like the ones used on Helium.com and all across the internet - to identify the site. The user builds a library of bookmarks on the service that can be viewed by other users who are then able to copy your bookmarks to their own library.
By having others view the user's bookmarks, and by viewing the bookmarks of others, the user is able to not only find new websites, but also people with similar interests (hence the "social" bookmarking). Many social bookmarking sites also include the ability to add comments to other users' bookmark libraries, send private messages to other users, rank websites and other users, and create online groups hosted by the social bookmarking service.
Having risen to popularity as they have, social bookmarking resources are updated very frequently and often use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to keep their users apprised of changes and updates, much like a news or dynamic information website would.
