How to save money on infant clothes

As a new mom on a budget myself, I know how much all those adorable baby outfits can cost.  Who doesn't want their baby to be dressed in the cutest clothes to get "aww"'s from family, friends, and even strangers?  Unfortunately, I have found that many baby clothes actually cost the same (or more!) as my own clothes.  I just can't bring myself to pay $40 for jeans my daughter will grow out of in a few weeks.

Here are a few strategies I have used to dress my little girl in good quality, "aww" inducing clothes for a fraction of retail price:

1) Take advantage of "hand-me-downs" from family and friends.  There is no shame in borrowing used clothes from those around you who have kids a bit older than your own.  Our little girl lives in clothes passed down from her cousins.  Babies grow out of their clothes so quickly that they often show very few (or zero!) signs of wear, even after being worn by multiple kids.  The best part?  You get good as new clothes for nothing!

2) Utilize the internet to find great deals on gently used baby gear.  I have a number of mom friends who have both sold and purchased bundles of baby clothing using free classified ad websites like Craigslist and Kijiji.  Often moms will sell gently used baby clothes by the box.  You can buy a number a pieces (usually 5-15) for a set price - which of course is negotiable!  Another great thing about these websites is that you can browse locally and pick up your purchases, so you don't have to worry about shipping costs.  Wash your baby's new clothes on the hot cycle and they're ready to go!

3) Buy clothes in their off-season.  Clohing stores usually sell off clothes at the end of the season for greatly reduced prices.  Shop the clearance section to pick up things you can tuck away for later in the year.  Not only will you save money, but it's like opening presents when you get to pull out your great finds a few months later!

4) Shop online.  There are so many great websites that offer brand name infant clothes for discounted prices.  Some of my favourites include Amazon, Diapers, and BabyMallOnline.  This is also a great way to find organic cotton or specialty items.

5) Shop in used clothing stores. Sure, you have to spend a bit of time picking through the racks, but there are great deals to be had!  I often find high-end brand name baby clothes for 70-90% off the retail price.  Some stores also let you trade in used clothes for credit in the store - a great way to recycle clothes your baby has grown out of.

6) Sign up for "deal of the day" programs.  BabySteals features a different item each day at a greatly reduced price. You have to act fast though - many deals sell out!

Babies are cute no matter what, so don't stress about buying your little munchkin the latest and flashiest clothes.  As long as your baby has clean clothes to wear, he or she is sure to be happy and nothing is cuter than a smile!
