Although football is favored over soccer for spectators, soccer is more popular than football for children to play. This is because it is a safer sport. Children are not afraid of running around and kicking a ball compared to being crushed by kids in football. More importantly, Moms are more willing to allow children to play soccer over football since the chance of injury or infliction of pain is lower. The sport is also a perfect way to keep children in shape since they will be constantly on the run.
I used to be a "Soccer Mom". My son played soccer from kindergarten until about fifth grade. I loved watching this fast paced game. The sport kind of reminds me of basketball since the kids are always running, and kicking the ball into the goalie, comparable to throwing a ball into a basketball hoop. It's fast paced action and fun for the kids, especially when there's good snacks and a trophy/pizza party at the end, no matter win or loose.
