just ten years old
perfect markings
blue merle shetland sheepdog
eyes that sparkled
and looked right through you

(she used to bound up those stairs!)
when her legs gave out
we laid her on a small fleece mattress
her favorite bed
and we watched
watched while unable to do anything
watched her take her last breaths
we told her we loved her
we held her in our arms
listless
lifeless
her spirit somewhere else now
exactly where we'll never know
we held hands in a circle around her
said a prayer
and in that brief moment
let her
go
