How to keep a cat calm in cat carrier

Keeping cats calm when they have to be placed in a pet carrier is essential for their own safety.  Disturbed cats can cause harm to themselves and their surroundings.  There are several ways to assist the cat in staying calm while in a carrier.  The cat is likely to stay calm if it feels comfortable and isn't moved more than absolutely required.  Let's take a look at the best tips and precautions related to cat carriers.

Setting up the carrier so it is comfortable for the cat

Setting up the carrier seems simple.  It is, however, important to remember the cat's personality and habits when setting up their temporary home.  Some cats sleep on cat beds that will fit into a pet carrier.  If this is the case, put their bed into the pet carrier so they will feel more comfortable.  The same is true for a favorite blanket, basket, toy, or anything that the cat is accustomed to.

The cat will feel less stressed in a pet carrier if the contents are those that they are already used to using at home.  Additionally, the pet carrier shouldn't have a different smell if it can be helped.  Be sure the pet carrier is clean and free of any scents from other animals.  It is helpful to place the carrier in the room with the cat for at least a few hours prior to putting the cat in the carrier.

If the cat usually hides in boxes and tight spots, place the carrier in the room with a towel or blanket over it and leave the door open. Often, cats will go into the carrier to check it out and fall asleep.  This makes it very easy for the pet parent to just close the door.

Including items in the pet carrier

Be sure not to include any items in the carrier which could become unsafe for the cat if it became distressed.  There shouldn't be any leashes or anything that could choke the cat left in the carrier.  If required, transport these items separately.

Food and water can be included if absolutely necessary but not while the carrier is being carried and transported.  If you are vacationing and need the cat to stay in the carrier, place food and water in the carrier several times per day but don't let the carrier become soiled by overturned water bowls and old food.  This can happen if the product is spilled under a blanket or towel and goes unnoticed.

It is a great idea to put some sort of pet pad in the bottom of the carrier for the cat to sleep on.  This will also become an absorbent material if the cat has an accident.

For all-day use, a small litter pan can be included in the pet carrier if the cat will be locked up in the carrier all day.  They can only "hold it" for so long.

Training the cat to go into the carrier

Doctors Foster and Smith recommend training the cat to go into the carrier.  This can be done by placing treats or food inside the carrier and telling the cat to go "inside" when they enter the carrier for the reward.  This enables you to just command the cat to go "inside" when you need them in the carrier.
