The allure of fame can be incredibly attractive, with its seeming promise to provide massive fortune, power, and recognition. Countless people try to attain a measure of notoriety and never truly succeed; and, even among those who do, many must then deal with the pitfalls of becoming famous. As it turns out, being a “famous person” is not an entirely pleasant experience.
Privacy Loss
Once a human being has become a notable name and face, the media will try to capitalize on such recognition by pursuing that person for headlines, images, interviews, stories, and every needless little detail of their life in both public and private arenas. The exploits of the pesky paparazzi are famous, but perhaps even more overwhelming is the general desire of the news world to publish negative headlines rather than positive ones, thus creating the pervasive feeling that everyone involved in celebrity news is just waiting for the next mistake and only seeking failures rather than encouraging successes.
Intense Stress
Fame can be fleeting, and with the advent of global communications and fame-busting tools like YouTube, the competition is incredible. For celebrities, there is a constant pressure to perform; and, often, to not only perform but continue performing at an absolutely top-notch level, often expected to better themselves with each successive appearance, concert, movie, or other outlet. Not only can a single mis-step derail an entire entertainment career, but the immensely talented are prone to the possibility of getting lost in the shuffle of other similarly talented people.
Health Consequences
Then there is the somewhat well-publicized “dark side” of fame, wherein celebrities often engage in self-destructive behavior. Whether this is due to incredible boredom, a true lack of self-control, or simply the access to self-destructive means, the truth probably differs from subject to subject. Nonetheless, the one sure element is that when a person has thousands of dollars to burn, they often attract illicit company, and also run the risk of becoming involved with dangerous narcotics and other harmful influences. As has tragically been seen with case after case, despite their wealth and resources, many celebrities meet early ends and terrible circumstances.
While the appeal of fame and fortune will likely never quite lose its luster, the fact remains that there are definitely some pitfalls of becoming famous. Hopefully, future generations of celebrities and their fans will learn how to best support each other in a healthy manner, toward the goal of encouraging and fostering bright talent for mutual enjoyment, without burning them out into a tragic downward spiral.
