Tips for home improvement on a budget

My husband and I glanced down at the two page wish list of stuff to do and to repair around the house. I knew that it would be worth it when it was finally done. That list sure looked long though. I cringed when adding up the final cost of all these items. But I kept telling myself that we could do it and would be happy that we did. Our son's first birthday was just a month away and I wanted the house to look perfect. Well, that wasn't the only reason but was the best to get this stuff done. Some of the chores were things we should have done 5 years ago.

We had stashed away some chore money over the last few months in preparation for this. We stopped eating out and watched our spending in other areas. Now we finally had a chunk of money under the mattress to spend at Lowe's. As my husband and I developed our plan, we thought of some good ideas to save time and money.

1. Make a list and prioritize it. What are the things that you are sure that needs to be done now and what are the ones that can wait until the end.
2. Save money in preparation. By saving money, you'll least be likely to use your credit cards which in the long run will cost you more.
3. Check the circular ads for coupons. Occasionally hardware or garden stores will send out coupons. Sometimes you may only save 5-20 dollars but if you are buying only the things you need it will be worth it.
4. If possible try to borrow equipment like ladders or wheelbarrows from friends or neighbors. Sometimes that expense can add up before you even buy your supplies.
5. Try to do alot of the work yourself. If you don't know, ask a friend. The Internet and the how-to clinics at the hardware stores are a great resource to fall back on.
6. Be patient with your work. Expect not everything you attempt will turn out perfect. Some of them, you might even have to redo. Maybe adding a little extra into the budget for these unexpected events would be a great idea.
