Manchester is a city with a rich and proud history, cultural sights and bursting with summer events for visitors of all ages. From touring one of the spectacular galleries or museums, to spending the day at one of the cities fun and unique festivals the city is alive with things to do all summer long.
Revisit History
The Manchester Museum has a wide variety of exhibits and hands on activities including Egyptian artifacts, a paleontology area where dinosaurs, minerals and plants from prehistoric times can be viewed, a live animals tour and story time for the children. The museum located on Oxford Road at the University of Manchester is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm and Sundays from 11 am until 4 pm and the admission is free.
A Day On The Farm
Families and children will find Smithills Open Farm the place to be for an adventurous day in the open countryside of Manchester. There are numerous attractions to keep the kids busy all day such as driving the toy tractor and trailers, riding a donkey, petting the animals and feeding the lambs. The farm is located on Smithills Dean Road in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The hours of operation are 10 am until 5 pm, seven days per week. Admission to the farm is £6.00 for adults, £5.00 for children age 2-16 and children under 2 are free.
More Than “Just A Park”
The summer weather in Manchester, UK is perfect for spending the day outdoors at Heaton Park where visitors of all ages will find more to do than simply going for a walk in the park. There are numerous attractions at the park such bowling greens, boating lake, horse riding, row boats, an animal center and a café for an afternoon snack. The park is located in the historical area of Manchester which includes Heaton Hall where visitors can get a glimpse of historical musical instruments and furniture or enjoy one of the concerts and plays performed at the Hall.
Festivals, Festivals & More Festivals
For festival lovers looking for things to do, Manchester has a variety of summer festivals with one that is sure to please everyone.
*July of 2011 marks the first annual Ben and Jerry’s Sundae in the Park Festival, held at Heaton Park. The festival is opportunity to spend the day sampling all of the Ben and Jerry’s Fairtrade ice cream flavors and enjoying various festival attractions such as live music and children’s activities.
*The annual Manchester International Festivalis a two week long event in July, that brings together a variety of the arts including theater, music and artworks done by locals as well as some of the best artist worldwide.
*June of 2011 is the 25th anniversary of the annual Stockport Beer & Cider Festival, held at Edgeley Park has over 100 Beers, Ciders and Parries’ for visitors to try. The festival also has a variety of hot and cold food vendors and live music.
*The annual Rochdale Canal Festival held is a two week long event held August at the Rochdale Canal. The festival has something to do for visitors of all ages including boat trips, horse drawn canal boats, angling, nature activities, art, music and crafts.
