Are you planning a tropical vacation this summer or this year?  Packing for vacation can be hectic.  You may always feel like you are forgetting something.  Of course you will be needing sunscreen, swimwear, and a camera; but what else?   Here are some do’s and don’ts on what to pack for your tropical vacation.

The Essentials

No matter where you travel, it is important to pack all of your important documents including; passports, tickets, travel insurance documents, reservation confirmation, and hotel and emergency contact numbers.  You should make sure that all important documents are packed in one accessible bag that can be carried on your flight.

In order to protect yourself from the sun, pack a sunscreen with high SPF, a hat, visor, and sunglasses.  This is especially necessary in tropical climates.  If you are planning to do some scuba diving, you will need to bring your diving certificate card.   When bringing your camera along for the trip, make sure that you pack extra film, batteries, and memory cards.  If you wait to purchase these items at the resort, this can be costly.   In addition, if you take prescription medication, make sure that they are packed in a carry on bag in case your luggage is delayed or lost.

Do’s

If you wear glasses or contacts, pack extra pairs. If you are planning  to travel with  your laptop, check to see if your hotel or resort has in room or wireless access.

We often think of tropical climate as always sunny.  However, you should keep in mind that it does rain in this type of climate.  Therefore, make sure to pack a small umbrella and a light weight hooded rain jacket.

For men and women, pack a nice outfit and at least one pair of nice shoes for an evening out.

Don’ts

Don’t pack camouflage clothing.  You may be surprised to know that Caribbean countries such as Trinidad, Barbados, and Tobago prohibit civilians from wearing camouflage clothing.

Travelers should also avoid overpacking..  There are some items that can be left at home such as shampoo, soap, and hair dryers.  This can save space in your suitcase. It is best not to bring expensive jewelry on vacation.

Preparing for any vacation can be overwhelming and stressful.  Travel can be especially stressful when dealing with flight delays and getting through security at the airport.  By using the above suggestions, preparing for your vacation ahead of time can help your tropical vacation go smoothly.
