Tips for staying connected with teens in a computer age

As the mother of three teenagers, I find myself in constant competition with their cyber social life. Living in a rural area, email and instant messenger are often their only contact with friends outside of school.

In an effort to be part of their cyber world without invading their privacy (which is definitely taboo), the kids and I came up with some computer activities that help keep us linked'.

1. I have my computer, they have theirs. By having two computers in the house, we avoid competing for computer time.
2. Since I grew up in a time before computers, my skills are pretty minimal compared to those of my teens. That's where I let them be the teacher. They show me how to perform simple tasks or find new things. It makes them feel very important.
3. We have each others' email addresses and enjoy sending jokes, notes, and even e-cards back and forth. It feels great when one of them asks if I received the email they sent. It shows me that this communication between us is important to them as well.
4. In this age of computers, board games are out, computer games are in. So, I keep my eyes open for games that we can all enjoy.

Parents today have to be willing to spend time in their teens' world if they want to stay connected. It's fun and interesting to learn these new skills, and your teens really appreciate the effort.
