There are several point to point (P2P) download programs: Azureus, Bittorrent, eMule, eDonkey (some versions include Overnet), Overnet and/or Shareaza. You can find the programs by doing a Google search. Download the program and install it. You'll get familiar with how to use each program in no time (actually, it is great fun 'receiving' you first free program).
Here's how it works: via the program you connect to a server somewhere in the world which does not contain the program you want to download. The server only establishes a connection between your computer and the computer of some other 'end' user that does contain (part of) the file you want to download (this is called Point to point connection or P2P). So when you download (part of) the file, you download it directly from someone else's computer.
The catch is, most programs do not allow you to download without sharing content on your own computer too, and this sharing is the most illegal part of the setup in most countries. So watch it a little. Make sure you're not one of the very very unlucky ones who gets caught sharing and downloading 'illegal' software.
The way to watch out is: be patient. If you wait awhile downloading feature films, for instance, chances of ending up on some film studio's list get slimmer. If you wait awhile downloading the newest Madonna CD, chances, etc...
My favorite download program is the eDonkey client which includes Overnet, by the way (this means that a query searches on both eDonkey and Overnet servers to set up a P2P connection with another client).
Success!
