Winning the war against terrorism

Something that is not understood in many parts of America is the fact that America is at war. We are dealing with forces both foreign and domestic that threaten our freedom and our way of life. Open source intelligence, or information gained by news media, the internet, periodicals, and other open information is more damning in fighting terrorism than in any other time of war. Our methods are revealed on the evening news and broadcast around the world at an almost up to the minute rate. This makes it extremely difficult to fight an effective war when all your enemy has to do is turn on the TV and find out where our week points are.

Few Americans see the big picture. We all want a safe environment to live in and bring up our children. We all want to leave our garbage at the curb and have it whisked away to some other land so we don't have to deal with it. We feel the same way about terrorism. We'd like to leave it at the curb and be done with it. It is the "not in my back yard" mentality. America's weaknesses lie in both its fickle non committal nature mixed with our strong moral obligation for personal freedoms. Most Americans aren't willing to give up personal freedoms in order to protect the country that provides those freedoms. This is like rearranging lawn chairs on the deck of a sinking ship. The terrorists have figured this out and are playing to those weaknesses. Our major media outlets are supported by advertisers, and our advertisers want to be on the network with the best ratings so the media outlets play both extremes to focus on the conflict between the left and right while the silent majority has to sit on their hands frustrated.

The war on terror has received a lot of criticism but several facts are indisputable. First, we have brought the fight to those who would do us harm. Secondly, since September 11th, we have not experienced any terrorist attacks on our streets or in our skies. Every time you see a car bomb, improvised explosive devices, or attack on coalition forces in Iraq, it is an attack that could otherwise be against a civilian target in the United States. By bringing the fight to them we disrupt their plans and kill their assets thwarting future attacks on our soil. The warrantless surveillance program is a continuation of that effort. It is bringing the fight to the enemy and being proactive in our quest to rid the world of Terrorism.
