Each of us need to try to do what we can to make this world a better place to live now for us and our children and also for years to come.
We need to help those that need insurance so they can see a doctor and get their medicine. We need to help single woman with small children find a successful way out of their plight, through job training, parenting classes, higher education such as technical school or college, programs that really do something not just put a band aid on the problem.
Yes, people often need a helping hand, especially the impoverished and the handicapped. But the most rewarding and successful program for people in these situations is to be able to do for themselves. Until they can however, we need to be willing to help with programs to assist them.
The elderly in American are forgotten, and mistreated many times, often not having enough money to buy food and medicine. Often these same elderly have raised families of their own and were good Americans, good parents, attended PTA, etc. but since they have joined the ranks of the elderly their families are off busy with raising their children and working their jobs and some of them have no one. Some of them are very lonely and see no one. Allot of elderly people turn to gambling and drinking and other dangerous things to just get to see people and be around society. This is where they can fit in and yes have some fun. But they can get addicted to drink or gambling or something else not good for them, and they are not only lonely but end up broke or without a place to stay as they lost their home.
The handicapped in American are considered a bother and a nuisance by some people. They don't like them to have special parking spots or to be able to get out. My 81 year old mother could hardly walk to the front of the grocery store from a battle with cancer for 10 years and then having to have two hips replaced, but she tried, and a car full of young men drove past her and since she took too long to get across the street to the store they yelled at her, "go home, if you can't walk just stay at home where you belong." She was devastated and very upset over these comments from the young men. After all, someday they will be old too if they live to be 81, and I wonder how they would feel if someone did that to them?
We need to have a kinder, gentler world for the elderly, the poor, and the handicapped. We just need to put ourselves in their shoes for a minute because as the age old saying goes, "but for the grace of God, go I." We never know when we might end up without work, get handicapped and can't do for ourselves, or eventually get old and need some help.
