Into Rescue and Freedom

I hadn’t seen my friends as a whole in over a year but tonight is the Fourth of July. A condo was rented in upstate New York and I was invited by those loyal to me. My chance finally came. I spent all day getting ready for this. Bought an entire new outfit from my snake skin purse to my hot pink lace flats and sleek white dress. (Probably a bad idea for camping, but I just had to buy it!) I had my nails done French and my crazy curly hair-do that seemed to be my best look.

I arranged for a ride with John, Danielle and Jeff. I was greeted by my best friends and Jeff complimented me…secretly titillating my insides. He was someone I had a sort of secret relationship with. Not a secret from Danielle and John of course, but from the others.

Halfway through the night and six beers down, I circled the cabin for new banter. When I couldn’t find any interesting enough I started for the door to travel around the grounds. I heard my name from just outside the door.

“Turns out Alex was right about her all along.”

“You’re forgetting that I’m the one who took her on the date, Anna.”

“Yeah but, Steve, she moved from Will to Rob to you in a few months. Whose next? Joe? She has herpes too, right Rob?”

“What do you think?” Marko asked.  Jeff answered but I stopped listening. I backed away and headed straight for the bathroom. Some privacy to get myself together.  I told myself what I always tell myself in situations like this. Guys like me. I’m pretty, I’m a lady and I can hang. It’s not my fault that I’m so perfect. (A little extreme, I know, but it helps my ego) there’s no point in being upset over something I can’t control-how others think of me. They’re all jealous obvi. I waited in the bathroom a little longer hoping that by the time I left the doorway outside would be cleared out…it was.

I stood alone for a while. Behind me, a Fourth of July party mobbed with enemies. This night was supposed to be my comeback night. A failed attempt at getting my friends back. I lit a cigarette and thought of the costs of a cab and hotel room.

“I cant-“ but I cut Jeff off mid
