There are many conditions which can cause frequent urination in men. An enlarged prostate or prostatitis (infection of the prostate gland) are among the most common causes. Other conditions which may cause more frequent urination in men include stroke or other neurological diseases, bladder cancer, diabetes (both type 1 and type 2 diabetes), anxiety, pelvic tumors, or use of medications such as diuretics.
Prostatis occurs when the prostate gland becomes swollen and infected. Due to its close location just below the bladder, changes in urination are one of the first signs of prostatitis. Nocturia, or frequent nighttime urination, is common. The Mayo Clinic has identified several risk factors for prostatitis, including dehydration, young or middle age, unprotected sexual intercourse, and having HIV. Urinary tract infection can occur with prostatis.
Tests
Many diagnostic tests are available to determine the cause of frequent urination. Typically, a simple urinalysis is done as a starting point to detect abnormalities. Depending on the other signs and symptoms, the physician may order urine cultures, a cystoscopy, or an abdominal ultrasound. A cystoscopy is an invasive procedure in which a tiny camera is advanced through the urethra to the bladder to view the structures. During a cystoscopy, a tissue biopsy may be taken for further analysis. In an abdominal ultrasound, gel is applied to the stomach and a wandlike device transmits sound waves to a monitor, similar to a fetal ultrasound. This test is non-invasive.
When to call the physician
Fever, back or side pain, vomiting, or shaking chills may indicate a kidney stone. Increased thirst, fatigue, or sudden weight loss can be a sign of diabetes. Bloody or cloudy urine or presence of a discharge from the penis indicate the need for medical evaluation. Symptoms which appear after unprotected sexual intercourse may indicate an STD. Left untreated, health problems and worsening infections are possible.
Preventing frequent urination problems
Prevention can go a long way towards preventing health problems which cause increased urination. Regular physical check ups and avoiding unprotected intercourse can help prevent some of the conditions which contribute to frequent urination. If changes in urination habits occur, especially with other signs and symptoms, medical advice should be sought. Follow the full course of treatment, especially if antibiotics are prescribed to prevent a rebound infection.
