With the increasing prices on everything from food to gas, it is only natural for Americans to look for avenues other than stores to get what they want. Garage sales are a very popular method for finding great bargains. They are a good way to raise some extra money if you want to have one, and they are a great way to save massive amounts of money when shopping at them. So, either way, it is a win-win situation. Now, it is time to think about how to fully optimize your bargain potential.
Make a list
It is good to have an idea of some things you would like to find deals on. Making a list can help you scan the ads in the paper and on the Internet better. You can get an idea of the sales that seem like they would have some potential bargains.
Find the sales
There are often neighborhood sales that have numerous sales in one area. However, keep in mind that these neighborhoods probably have sales every year so their inventory may not be as extensive as others. Also, they may be pricing higher based on the expected traffic of customers.
Let's talk money
Have an idea of what your maximum price would be for certain things. The prices at garage sales are all over the place. It all depends on what the owner feels the items are worth. You may think a pair of jeans at a garage sale should only be priced a dollar, but another may feel that their jeans should be five dollars. If it is more than you originally wanted to pay, you can ask the owner if they would take less. Often, people who hold sales expect this. However, if the owner is not willing to go down to the price you would like to pay, move on. You will find someone who has similar items at the prices you want.
Making money
There are many different sites on the Internet such as Craigslist and Ebay where you can sell your bargain finds. You will be surprised at the profit you can make. First, you want to have an idea of what things are selling for. You need to do this in order to determine if an item is really a great bargain. There are some people who make great sums of money just buying and selling. If you run across an astounding deal yet do not need the item, consider selling it.
Timing
There is some merit to the old phrase "the early bird catches the worm". Keep in mind that there are many other individuals looking for the same things you are. If there is a great bargain to be had, it will often be had early in the day. I recommend getting to the sale that looks the most promising right when they open.
Have fun
There is a lot of fun to be had at garage sales. It is interesting seeing the collections of different people even if you do not find anything you want to purchase. Kids can have fun as well. They can find many different items for just a few dollars. Giving them a bag of change could entertain them for hours.
Finding bargains at garage sales is not difficult. It just takes a little bit of planning and a keen eye for those amazing prices. Timing is everything and arriving early ensures your best possible odds. Going to garage sales is like a treasure hunt for the whole family and can be surprisingly fun.
